Three-Door Victorian Alcove Cabinets for a Woodford Green IG8 Period Home
Our client came to us with the classic request: a pair of Victorian-style alcove cabinets either side of a chimney breast in their Woodford IG8 home. The brief was straightforward, but one particular decision took some back-and-forth — whether to build each cabinet with two doors or three.
Two Doors vs Three Doors: Why Alcove Width Matters
It's an important question. Most homeowners prefer the clean look of a two-door cabinet, but it's not always practical. Once the alcove exceeds roughly 1250 mm wide, each of those two doors ends up very wide indeed — tricky to open without moving furniture out of the way, and awkward to live with day to day.
For this project we talked through the trade-offs:
- Two-door layout — visually simpler and feels traditional, but doors become unwieldy above 1250 mm. Best for narrower alcoves.
- Three-door layout — three longer, slimmer doors that open comfortably in any room, and far easier access to the storage inside. The right answer for wider alcoves.
Our client chose three doors, and it worked out very well. The slimmer doors actually look elegant in their own right — long and refined rather than bulky — and the storage inside is noticeably easier to use than it would have been with two wide doors.
Inside the Cabinets: Adjustable Shelving and Cable Management
All our alcove cabinets are built with adjustable internal shelving as standard, so the layout can be reconfigured as storage needs change. For this build we also included access holes for cables — through every shelf and between the two cabinets — so the internet router, DVD player, Sky box, and anything else can plug in cleanly without cable clutter spilling into the room.
Classic Mouldings Retained
The frames and doors keep the same classic mouldings we use across all our Victorian alcove cupboards — these period details suited the home best, so we held firm on the traditional side even while the three-door configuration gave the pair a slightly different look.
A Rich Green Against Oak Floors
The cabinets were finished in a Farrow & Ball green in 15% sheen — a rich, atmospheric tone that pops beautifully against the oak floor and brings the alcoves forward as a feature rather than letting them disappear into the walls. Every piece was milled, spray painted, and assembled in our Leytonstone workshop, then installed on site.
