We're based in Leytonstone E11 and our core service area covers a 30-40 minute drive from our workshop - Leytonstone, Leyton, Walthamstow, Wanstead, Forest Gate, Woodford, Snaresbrook, South Woodford, Highams Park and Manor Park. We also regularly work west across Hackney, Stoke Newington, Clapton and Dalston. For projects further afield in London, get in touch and we'll see if we can help..
John McMullen, the owner, grew up in East London and is extremely proud of his local area - when people think ‘carpenter East London’ he wants them to think McMullen Interiors.
Why we know East London homes
Most of our work is in Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis built between roughly 1880 and 1910 - the housing stock that defines neighbourhoods like Leytonstone, Walthamstow, Wanstead, Forest Gate, Hackney, Stoke Newington and Clapton. These houses share a set of quirks that catch out joiners who haven't worked on them before. We've been doing this for over 20 years from a workshop a few streets from where most of these homes were built.
Mouldings that match what's already there
Original East London terraces have deep skirtings - often 8 or 9 inches tall - with ogee, torus or chamfered profiles, plus matching architraves and picture rails. New alcove units that ignore this period detailing always look bolted on. We match the existing mouldings into every cabinet face, plinth and pelmet so the unit reads as if it was always there.
At home in conservation areas
Large parts of our patch are designated conservation - Walthamstow Village, Bushwood in Leytonstone, Woodgrange in Forest Gate, Wanstead Park, Lloyd Park, swathes of Hackney and Stoke Newington. Internal fitted furniture doesn't need planning consent even in these areas, and we know how to work alongside the period features the council wants preserved.
Heritage paint, factory-quality finish
Period homes call for heritage palettes - Farrow & Ball, Little Greene, Paint & Paper Library and similar. Our dedicated spray booth gives those expensive paints a factory-grade finish that brushwork can't match. We can colour-match to existing wall paint if you'd rather not repaint the whole room around a new unit.
Built for out-of-square walls
Victorian and Edwardian chimney breasts are rarely true and almost never the same width on each side. Walls bow, skirtings step, ceilings rake. Every alcove unit is templated in situ before cutting - no two cabinets we build are the same width or perfectly square. Site-made adjustments are part of the job, not an afterthought.

In East London
From first conversation to finished room
Three steps, no surprises.
Generally speaking we have ~10 weeks lead time in order to manage demand/capacity for the workshop.
01 - Free home consultation
After an initial indicative quote by email, we come to you for a site vist.
Most consultations take ~30–45 minutes - we'll measure the alcoves, look at the room's existing mouldings and finishes, and talk through what you want from the design and layout of the pieces.
02 - Detailed quote and design
Based on our consultation and finalised measurements, you'll receive a formal quote. If you're happy to proceed, you put down a deposit and your job joins our production queue.
We'll agree finer details such as hardware and paint colour before anything gets going in the workshop.
03 - Workshop build and install
When your job reaches production, the units are built and spray-painted in our Leytonstone E11 workshop and an installation date is agreed. We then bring the units to your home largely pre-finished.
Installation is typically within a day with minimal mess - we cover floors, vacuum thoroughly, and most rooms are usable again the same evening.
McMullen Interiors was founded by John McMullen in 2011 — he's been a working carpenter since 1999 and grew up in East London. Read more about the workshop and our story →

McMullen Interiors was founded in Leytonstone by John McMullen in 2011, but John has been a working carpenter for over 20 years — he began his City & Guilds apprenticeship in 1999 and grew up in East London. The business has stayed local throughout, with the workshop in E11 since the start. See our about page for John's full background.
Yes — the bulk of our work is exactly this. East London is rich with Victorian and Edwardian terraces across Leytonstone, Walthamstow, Wanstead, Forest Gate, Hackney, Stoke Newington, Clapton and surrounding neighbourhoods. We specialise in alcove cabinets, cupboards and shelves that sit either side of original chimney breasts, with mouldings matched to your existing skirting and architraves. See our Victorian alcove cupboards page for design detail and examples.
Our work is primarily in period houses where bespoke joinery makes the most difference and access is straightforward. We can fit alcove units, wardrobes and TV units in flats and converted apartments where access works — typically ground-floor flats, garden flats, or upper-floor flats with lifts and decent stair widths. We don't normally work in higher floors of blocks where furniture can't be brought in or assembled in place. Send us photos of the access and we'll give you an honest answer up front.
Yes — and East London has many. Internal fitted furniture (alcove cabinets, cupboards, wardrobes, shelving) doesn't require planning permission, even in conservation areas, and even for Grade II listed properties whose interiors aren't separately listed. If your property has an internally listed interior, we can work with your heritage consultant to ensure the design respects listed elements. We're experienced with the period detailing — coving, picture rails, original fireplaces — that you'll want to preserve.
A pair of alcove cabinets either side of a chimney breast with floating shelves above is by far our most-requested project — it suits the Victorian and Edwardian terraces that dominate East London, hides everyday clutter and TV equipment, and adds display space without crowding the room. Typical cost is £3,500–£4,500 fully spray-painted; see our alcove unit pricing page and the Forest Gate E7 case study for a worked example.
